Background of the study
Interactive digital whiteboards (IDWs), also known as smartboards, have transformed traditional classrooms by offering dynamic, multimedia-rich teaching environments. These digital tools combine the functions of traditional whiteboards with the capabilities of touch-screen technology, allowing teachers to integrate text, images, videos, and interactive applications into lessons. The use of IDWs is believed to increase student engagement, improve comprehension, and foster a more collaborative learning atmosphere (Hockly, 2023; Lim, 2024). Furthermore, IDWs facilitate interactive lessons that can cater to various learning styles, which is particularly beneficial in diverse classroom settings.
In Lafia, Nasarawa State, the adoption of IDWs in secondary schools is still in its early stages. While some schools have integrated smartboards into their classrooms, the full impact of these devices on teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes has not been adequately researched. Teachers may face challenges in utilizing IDWs effectively, including inadequate training, limited access to digital content, and technical issues (Ezekiel & Afolabi, 2023). This study seeks to investigate how the use of IDWs in secondary schools in Lafia influences teaching practices, lesson delivery, and student understanding of subjects.
Statement of the problem
The adoption of interactive digital whiteboards in secondary schools in Lafia is still limited, and there is insufficient research on their impact on teaching effectiveness. While IDWs have the potential to improve teaching and learning, challenges such as insufficient teacher training, inadequate access to digital content, and technical failures might reduce their effectiveness. Therefore, it is crucial to examine how these tools affect teaching practices in Lafia’s secondary schools, including their influence on lesson delivery, student engagement, and learning outcomes.
